weely blog #5

Create your own mind maps at MindMeister

This week our new web 2.0 tool was Mind Meister. It is this cool website that lets you create these cool presentations. It is easy to use and great for presenting ideas and views.

Some of the new terms we learned this week we learned was in the form of an acronym.

Authority-who wrote it who published it? Does the author have any expertise on the topic you are researching? What else has the author written on this topic? Have you ever seen or heard the authors name before?

Sources-If information is fact then it needs documentation. Documentation is the citations and sources that the author of the article you are using is the information the author used in the article.
Does the author include citations, footnotes, and a bibliography.

Purpose- Why was the source written? If you don't know why the source was written then how do you know it is a good source? Basically what soes the source do.

Evenness_ Is the article biased in any way? Is it presented objectively? Is the bias acknowledged? If the source is biased this does not mean you cannot use it just try to get more than that source to make sure that you are getting a good range and balance of information.

Coverage- How thoroughly is your topic covered? Is the information in the source new? Does the information support what you have found in other sources? Does the source provide good enough information  for your needs?

Timeliness-When was it written? Is the information up to date? It is best to look for up to date information. It also depends on your topic.

Why Evaluate                                                                                                 How do I Evaluate
                                                                                                                        Three criteria
1)authority
2)Accuracy
3) Bias
Because anyone can put anything
on the internet

This week in our digital literacy component we learned about this week was to evaluate websites. The reason we are being taught this is because anyone can put anything on the internet. These skills are good to have so you don't get bamboozled online.

This information will help me evaluate things and internet websites so that I will not get messed up with fake information.

My week has been a little frustrating because I have had work in classes that I did not understand. Some teachers have been a little annoying and caused me problems. It will hopefully get better once I get fully adjusted to this high school lifestyle.

I am ready for a relaxing weekend to get myself together again and ready for another long hard week of school.

Current Event Week #5

1. Topic:

My article is talking about Barnes and Noble's new Nook.

2. Article Title:

Nook HD Hands On: Is Having the Best Display Enough?

3. Article Source:

Where did you get the article? Hyperlink it.

4. Summary:

My article is about how the new nook compares to Kindle and the other types of devices like it. How the piece of technology looks. What kind of software it has. It also talks about the prices of the new Nook.

 5. Reaction:

I think that the new Nook is going to be great I think that they will fly off the shelves. The only thing is they are a little pricey if you ask me.

I mean they could use cheaper parts but, I guess  this would take away the quality of the product. I believe if you want a good product then you will have to pay a little more.

I feel that it is a waste of time to make small gains and producing a new one every year. If they would just wait for 2-4 years and make some major gains I feel they would get more business.

This event does not really affect me in any way. I do not have a problem just going to the library checking out a book and reading it.

It will affect me though if they keep on making advances in technology and get rid of hard copies of books completely.

6. World Impact:

This event will make a pretty good impact on the world because it may boost up the economy. The more stuff that people buy the better the economy is.

This may also make a bad impact on the world. If the technology in today's world keeps improving at a rapid pace everything may have something to do with electronics. The people of today need to get
 back to their roots.

This may also put some companies out of business. Which may make the economy worse.

Loop test 1

A new word we learned about this week was reputation- it is a general impression held by others and the public. I really already kind of knew what this term was but, this kind of explained it in a more clear way for me to understand.

This also has a lot to do with posting stuff online. Once you post something online then it is out there for everyone to see. Say if a picture of yourself got on the internet that you are not particularly proud of, this can affect your reputation in your daily life.

This can cause you to lose the opportunity to even get a job. People can also mess with photos and make you look bad. So be careful about what you post online.

Another word we learned was persist- this means to continue on and also to endure. Persistence is something everybody should have and want to have if you do not. If you have a kind of a give up attitude then you will probably not reach your highest potential in life.

Context can also be a bad and a good thing. Context is words that surround  information and help determine its meaning. Say you hang out with a bunch of people that look like thugs but they're really good people.

You hang out with them and you will also get judged the same way it is basically the same thing as context.

Tag and caption are basically the same thing. If  you do not know what this means it is words, terms, or even a sentence that  describes photos or videos.

The web tools we learned about this week was photo editing websites. This is how people can change your photo and make you look bad with this type of tool if they have bad intentions against you.

We also learned about this cool website called digital drivers license. It lets you learn about showing respect and all kinds of nifty stuff on this awesome teaching tool.

We did not learn this for that type of reason. We were shown this for educational purposes (don't use this in the way that was described bad). The picture editing website I used is hyper linked here.

These are a good  and  bad way this type of tool can be used online.

See people can do anything with photos online so be careful out there. The positive things about this is it can make a person look good in a way. It can also make a person look bad which is something you should not want to do.

This information that I have learned will make me be safer about what I put online and how I treat people online because I do not want them to do this to me.

I have had an okay week it has been good and bad. I did good on some tests. The one major bad thing that happened to me this week was when I bombed my first loop one grammar test and it did not help my grade go up any. Other than that it has been an awesome week.

Also I don't know about the people who are reading this but I am ready for a real fun weekend.

current event 9/20/12

Current events assignment

1. Topic:
The topic of my article is about shoes with GPS in them. You can click the heels and it will show you the way to your house.

2. Article Title:

These Shoes Guide You Home Using GPS, However Lost You Are

3. Article Source:

4. Summary:

This article is about shoes that have a GPS system embedded into the heel. You have to click the heels to make the GPS tell you how to get home.

There is lights on the front of the shoe which  point in the direction you need to go to get home.   So if you get lost a lot and lose your way to get home often then these are the shoes for you.

5. Reaction:

I think this is an okay idea but not that great of an idea. This is only good if you do a lot of walking. Most people now days drive a car and this would not be good for that because if you have a bunch of people looking at there shoes while driving then your going to have a bunch of wrecks.

This may be good though for college students who are on a big college campus and have to walk everywhere. If you get lost then you can easily get back to your dorm. This is also not that great because it can only be programmed to take you to one place.

These shoes are not very stylish either so if you like to have shoes that look sharp then these are not for you. I am not really affected by this new change in technology because I do not get lost very much when I am out walking by myself.

6. World Impact:

It does not really impact the world that much because I do not think people will take interest in these shoes. These shoes will maybe sell good for the first couple of months because  all of the things that they think it is but, it will just be a big disappointment in the end.

On the other hand these shoes may take off and change shoes for ever and it may spark all kinds of new ideas. It may make shoes never like they are right now and make them electronic from now on.

It also may make the economy better because it will spark a new way for the country to start manufacturing things again if they do not send them overseas to be produced.

Online Ethics

This week some new terms we learned are the following: Ethics- are principles and morale's that govern peoples behavior.

Online ethics are the same thing but, online and other technological devices (yes this means cell phones).

Digital citizenship- is a safe responsible and ethical approach to functioning in the digital world.

Privacy-  respect others privacy online (don't be fake).

Self expression and Identity-present yourself honestly and genuinely in the online world and in real life.

Connected culture- basically is the Golden Rule: treat others how you want to be treated.

A new digital tool we learned how to use this week is called Animoto. It is a tool that allows you to put pictures and text to music and turn it into a video.

The bad thing about this tool is you can only put so much text in each box . The good thing though is it very simple and easy to use, anyone can use it. Anyone in the world could use it, because it is just so simple the way the website is laid out it makes it easy to navigate around the page.

This week we learned about what a digital citizen is also. This is like the reputation of someone online. If they follow all of the things that were defined above then you are considered a good digital citizen.

This will affect the way I do things online and be more careful about what I say online also, that way I can be a good digital citizen.

The week has been very long but, has been very good. I have not had any problems with any teachers. My schoolwork has been pretty easy and I have not had to many problems with it.

The people at school have not been to obnoxious. I am ready for this wonderful spectacular weekend of nothing but fun ( with a little schoolwork).

Matthews Currernt event

Matthews current event

  • What is the topic of your article?
The topic of article is IPhone 5’s camera is a big letdown

2. Article Title:
  • IPhone 5's Camera Upgrade Is A Missed Opportunity

3. Article Source:
  • Where did you get the article? Hyperlink it.

4. Summary:

This article is about how Iphone’s new phone the 5’s camera and how it  was not much better than the last phone the 4s. It went from 5 mega pixels to 8 wick is okay but not enough.

Also about how the phone takes faster pictures.  The main thing the article is about though is how they did not make it a whole lot better.

5. Reaction:
I agree with this article a ton because if you are going to make a brand new phone why not make it a whole lot better. Instead of trying to make it smaller they should have made things better on the IPhone before making it smaller.

This does not affect me very much  because I do not own a IPhone and I do not do a lot of photography. I feel like they should have worked on how fast the programs on the phone run and also the storage devices.
They should also worry about how durable the phone is because the thinner it is the easier it will be to break.

6. World Impact:

This will be an impact on the world because it will allow people to take better photographs on their phones. Which will allow people to not have to have a regular digital camera if they keep making the cameras on phones better.

Which may put Digital camera companies out of business. This will be a good thing also because people will not have to spend more money on something that just does one job. I see this as a good and bad situation.

It will save money for the users, but if the companies that sell and produce digital cameras it will be a result of job losses.

Email etiquette

This week we learned about level three in parts of a sentence and it is phrases. We learned how they are used in a sentence. We also learned how a gerund is used use as a noun but, it sounds like a verb I thought this was really neat.

This week we learned how to use this very cool website called Google reader. It allows you to follow blogs by posting new updates straight to the webpage.

We were shown this very cool way to change our favicons which I thought was awesome.
A good thing about Google reader is it allows you to keep up to date on people’s blogs and things. Although it is Kind of difficult if you are not familiar with it real well so it was kind of difficult for me at first but it’s getting easier.

This week we learned about Email etiquette.  This is something that everybody who emails should know about. I did not know a lot about this but, did you know that typing in all capital letters on the internet was considered shouting.

That is weird who would have new that it is considered that. This new information I have obtained will help me out significantly from now on in my computer skills.

The Google reader will also help me stay up to date with the new trends and all the new gadgets also. Maybe from now on when I send my college teacher an Email I won’t be screaming at her.

This week summed up has been pretty good although it has been slow. I am so ready for the weekend though I can hardly stand it.

This week also has been Kind of hard though because it is awful boring and annoying that we have to walk in single file lines it is not like regular high school yet. Hopefully it will get better once we get in our new building.
